The False Isle Broken Consort plays period music ranging from the very
simple to to moderately complex, though nothing horribly difficult.
Period instruments are not required, but we favor those which are
non-electrified and preferably had some parallel in period. Trombones
preferred to saxophones, for example. "Broken Consort" is a period term
referring to a group of several different kinds of instrument, as
opposed to a recorder consort (all recorders) or a consort of viols
(all viol-family instruments).
We welcome beginners. You can come and join us and we'll fit you in to
the easier pieces and teach you to play...
- If you have played an instrument in the past but not picked it up
for years.
- If you've never played an instrument but want to (we'll lend you
a recorder or a violin to get started).
- If you haven't played very much, or for very long
- If you have an instrument in your attic you want to learn.
- If you're experienced on one instrument but a beginner on
another.
- If you can't read music but want to learn.
Some of the music we play is for more experienced players. If you want
to play this music you need to:
- Be able to read music.
- Be able to play most notes on your instrument without asking for
help (eg from the bottom note to high G if you're a treble instrument,
including C#, F#, Bb, Eb as well as all the naturals). A crib sheet or
fingering chart is OK, but we don't want to stop while you work it out.
- Be able to keep a beat and stay together with others.
- Be willing and able to practise between rehearsals.
- Be willing to play in the group in front of other people.
- Be able to come to most rehearsals.
