False Isle's Domesday Boke Pages

Title Page/Achievement

This is the first of our shire's eight pages.  This page was designed and drawn by Alicia le Wilfulle.  Alicia also did the calligraphy and painted the achievement.  Stephen of Hunmanby painted in the title.

At the top, False Isle's name is written in a style similar to that in the Lindesfarne Gospels and includes celtic knotwork (including beast's head) in the first letters of each word.  Some letters are also stacked as this is commonly used to maximize the use of space.

Under our name is our shire's achievement.  This was designed with input from the entire shire.  Central to the achievement is, of course, our shire device.  The blazon (description in heraldic language) is under the achievement and reads: "Per chevron argent goutty sable and vert, a mermaid Or crined and tailed, arms upraised holding in dexter hand an axe within a laurel wreath argent."

The supporters for our achievement are two heraldic sealions (heraldic sealions have the head of a lion and the body of a seacreature).  These were chosen for several reasons: our use of the mermaid inclines the shire towards a sea 'theme'; sea lions are common in our area; and the lion aspect reflects our early connection to Lions Gate.  The device is resting on land surrounded by beach and then the water from which the sealions have emerged; this reflects the 'island' nature of our shire.

On top of our device is the leafy mantling in the shire's green and white colors.  A grey standard style helm sites on the mantling topped by a grey castled coronet which is the insignia for a shire branch.  Out of the coronet is a golden mailed hand holding a green arrow with it's head in flames, representing our Mermaid's Tourney flaming arrows.

Below the achievement, surrounding the water, is a banner with our shire motto: Together We Achieve.  Several mottos were considered before this one was chosen but all reflected the shire's greatest strength - when something needs to be done, we all pull together and work as one to accomplish it.
