The final page is about our shire's main event - Mermaid's Tourney. As with the history, much more could have been included but was left out so as to fit the space available.
Alicia le Wilfulle designed, drew and calligraphed this page. She did the gold leaf and painted the title capitals and the snail as well as the whitework on the borders. The other painting (rest of the title, painted vinery and solid border colors) was painted by Stephen of Hunmanby. Text was written by Owyn of Clan Frog with input from Sabine de Provence and Rhyannan of Pembroke Castle and edited by Alicia.
The text reads:
Mermaid's Tourney
Born of Rhyannan of Pembroke Castle's imagination and fostered by her continuing commitment, Mermaid's Tourney has become well known for revelry, romance and camaraderie. The first tourney in AS 33 attracted a mere handful of gentles, but now we host nearly three hundred.
This tourney honours our protectress, the mermaid of whom a bronze statue sits underwater just off shore. Tributes to her have taken many forms including poetry, needlework, painting, dance and creations made from the natural surroundings.
Contestants fight with sword and with rapier and compete with bow and arrow. Combatants fight not only in the eric but also on the beach and in the woods. Not above resorting to cunning, a cow was once hurled by trebuchet into the ranks of the enemy. Even the youth take to the field vying for the coveted title of Boffer Champion.
When the bloodletting subsides, it becomes a gentler gathering where the mermaid has blessed many proposals, handfastings and weddings. The evening communal feast has featured pig roasts and braziers where bards, dancers and actors entertain. Once sated on good food and company, guests join us in shooting flaming arrows into the sea and releasing moonbags onto the eventide to drift glowing on the water. Some gather around the bardic fire while others enjoy fellowship in their camps and a few souls brave a midnight swim.
Sunday morn a court is held to honour those who have shown the most skill and chivalry. For many years Amanda and Gerhard held Baronial Courts and for the past two years Tir Righ's Coronets have graced our courts where we have joyously watched our own good gentles receive their awards of arms and other principality awards.
