The second of our pages is a map of our shire. This page was designed, drawn, calligraphed and mostly painted by Alicia le Wilfulle. Stephen of Hunmanby painted in the border band.
This is not an accurate 'to scale' map. Instead, as are many period maps, it indicates the important features and was adjusted to fit the space available. It is drawn in a style similar to that used in period. Islands and bays are included as these would be important to a water based community. The map includes a border from which the heads of the four winds are blowing.
Several people in the shire made suggestions of names for the features on the map, and the populace were given the opportunity to place their home on the map and to give it a period sounding name. Sabine de Provence drew the whale which graces the Inner Straight and provided a couple place names. Arianwen verch Laugharne and Rory Woulfe also supplied some of the names that were used on the final map while Alicia filled in others that had not been named.
Only a few main roads are included. Ships indicate the ferries on which our shire must travel.
The scroll reads:
FALSE ISLE
A beautiful land which is
surrounded by ocean and impassible mountains and can only be reached
with
a ship.
This was included to explain the
reason for our shire's name because we must be approached as if we were
an island although we are actually attached to the mainland.
